
Agnes Twiston Hughes was the first Welsh woman to qualify as solicitor in Wales, to hold a practising certificate and to run a legal practice. Her quiet contribution to the opening up of the profession was made in her local area and in her local community where she knew she had the ability and opportunity to make a difference. In the words of Janet Corke, her first articled clerk,
She could make you tremble in your boots … dressed in a well-cut suit … cigarette in one hand, a glass in the other, tall and confident, ready to take on the world – a remarkable feminist in the best sense of the word.
